Moving Checklist

We can assist you by providing names and numbers of competent tradespeople to help with you move.

Before you move:

  • Create a list of items you no longer need and want. Give them to charity, friends or family, hold a garage sale or sell them on ebay. The less stuff you have the easier it is to pack.
  • Have a supply of notification cards to inform people of your new address.
  • If renting, let the owner or managing agent know of your plans to move, giving the required 28 days notice.
  • As soon as you know your move date, book a removalist. Get a few quotes and be sure to check their insurance policies.
  • Organise for a storage facility if you need one.
  • Advise gas, electricity and water suppliers. Arrange final readings, disconnection, and reconnection at the new address.
  • Advise Australia Post and organise a mail redirection to your new home.
  • Advise telephone provider and arrange disconnection and the reconnection of services at your new home.
  • Advise your road authority, banks and financial providers, insurance providers, solicitors, stockbrokers and superannuation firms.
  • Advise the Australian Electoral Commission.
  • Close or transfer club memberships if required.
  • Cancel all delivery services, such as the daily newspaper.
  • Get your home and contents or car insurance reviewed.
  • Arrange for a permit for on-street parking at your new place (if required).
  • Advise your doctor and dentist. Establish where the nearest medical centre to your new property is located.
  • Establish which local council area you will be moving to and find out the rubbish collection days.
  • Get your pets records from the vet, including medical history and immunisation certificates.
  • Order quality removal boxes and packing materials. Use the same sized boxes as they fit better in the truck.
  • Organise for a rubbish removal service. A skip comes in handy while packing, to eliminate bags of rubbish.
  • Book a professional cleaner and organise for the carpet to be cleaned before you move.
  • Book an elevator in your apartment complex to use on the move day.
  • Start packing. This is a big job, so start weeks before the actual move date.

Packing:

  • Create a ‘move day’ bag. Put you keys, prescriptions and anything you need easy access to in it.
  • Label each box with which room it needs to go in. Boxes should be filled so that they do not crash when stacked.
  • Dismantle furniture, or leave it to the moving professionals. Put all bolts, brackets and screws etc. in a labelled and sealed bag. Then stick it firmly to the underside or in a draw of the item they belong to so you can easily find it later on.
  • Drain oil and or petrol out of mechanical items.
  • Back up you computers hard drive.
  • Return any DVD’s, games and/or library books you may have out.
  • Defrost the fridge the night before you move.
  • Take the remote garage door opener out of your car.
  • Use everything in the fridge/freezer before move day if you can.
  • Organise house settlement times and the change over of the keys.
  • Confirm with the removalist their arrival time.

On the day:

  • Hang in there!
  • Make sure your ‘move day’ bag is handy.
  • You may wish to arrange for children and pets to stay with relatives or friends as moving can be very stressful.
  • Give your pet a familiar toy during the move to reduce stress.
  • Check the telephone, electricity and gas in your new home have been connected.
  • Make a final inspection to ensure nothing has been forgotten.
